Nydia Ivonne Burchinal, 69, of Huntingtown, passed away November 12, 2022. She was born May 31, 1953, in San Juan, Puerto Rico to Manuel and Nydia (Santiago) Ortiz. Ivonne grew up in Puerto Rico coming to State College, PA for her high school years as her father attended Penn State University for his PhD. Returning to Puerto Rico, she completed her Associates degree in Interior Decorating and Fashion Design and worked as a window trimer for Learner Shops traveling throughout the Caribbean Islands. She later moved to Clinton, MD to be with her parents where she was introduced to her future husband, Charles Burchinal, who was a 1st Lieutenant in the Marine Corps, by her cousin CWO3 Rose Franco. After a whirlwind courtship of three months, Ivonne and Charles were married on April 16, 1977, at the base chapel at Marine Corps Base Henderson Hall in Arlington and about a year later were blessed with their daughter Elizabeth. In 1979 Charles was transferred to the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA where Ivonne joined the school's Artist Guild and took lessons in watercolor from a well know artist. It was here that she honed her talents as an artist and successfully displayed her art in local galleries. In 1981 they were transferred back to Virginia where they were again blessed with their son, Jonathan, and Ivonne continued to develop her artist skills in both watercolor and theorem painting working with a nationally known theorem painter and showing her paintings in local galleries. When Charles was discharged in 1987, they moved to Maryland where Ivonne joined the Maryland's Artist Guild and competed for the first time in the Guilds statewide competition where she won best in show over all the competition. It was during this time that Ivonne completed her certification as a graphic designer from the prestigious Corcoran School of the Arts and Design latter becoming a graphic illustrator for a local publishing company. She also applied her artist skills to cake decorating, working with her mother's wedding cake business where she entered the Wilton Company's Greater Washington Cake Decorating Contest again winning best in show in her first competition with her winning cake being featured in the Wilton's magazine. Ivonne's passion was her art and loved sharing her skill with others teaching after school art classes for the neighborhood children. Ivonne also enjoyed hosting a weekly local prayer group often referring to the members as her church sisters and spending time with her grandchildren.
Ivonne is survived by her loving husband Charles Burchinal of Huntingtown; her children Elizabeth Burchinal and Jonathan Burchinal also of Huntingtown; grandchildren Samantha Tipton, Austin Tipton, Carter Leigh Burchinal, and Steven Burchinal; her mother Nydia Ortiz; and brother Fernando Ortiz, Manuel Ortiz, Raul Ortiz, and sister Lourdes Ortiz, all of whom live in the Metro DC area.
