Delores Ann Smith, 77 of Cobb Island, Maryland, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 21, 2020 at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center in Clinton, Maryland.

Born on May 22, 1943 in Alexandria, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Leonard Ralph Thornton and Doris Swindall (Glen). Delores resided in McLean, Virginia and worked as a union meat wrapper until she made her home on Cobb Island, Maryland in 1963. Delores was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and enjoyed her time caring selflessly for others. Mrs. Smith was an avid supporter, dedicated volunteer, and life member of the Cobb Island Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services, Inc. Auxiliary.

Delores is survived by her husband of 56 years, Joseph Neal Smith and children Carl Smith (Carolyn) and Carla McDonnell (Stephen). She was the proud grandmother to Brandy Smith, Crystal Jackson (Wesley), Clint Smith, and James McDonnell (Whitney). She also leaves behind 11 great-grandchildren – Brendon Harper, Justin Jackson, Donovan Harper, Jesse Fisher, Jacob Smith, Jorja Fisher, Jack Fisher, MacKenzie McDonnell, Jamey Fisher, KayLeigh Jackson, and Savannah Smith. She is also survived by her brother, Ralph Thornton; many nieces, nephews, and cousins and other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Ruddle; step-father, Frances Grimes; parent-in-laws, Neal Joseph 'Pop' and Linda Smith and Rita Smith.

Services will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2020 at 2:00pm at the Cobb Island Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services, Inc. In accordance with COVID-19 guidelines, masks are required and social distancing is still in place. While establishments are operating at half capacity, we ask that all visitors be mindful of others.
