Pedestrian Killed by Deputy Identified

LEONARDTOWN, Md. (Oct. 31, 2016)—The victim of Sunday morning's accident where a sheriff's deputy struck and killed a pedestrian has been identified as Elder Amiclar Lucedro Moran, age 30, of Lexington Park. The deputy was identified as Sgt. Keith Moritz, a thirteen year veteran of the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office.

Police say the names of both the deputy and victim were unannounced pending notification to next of kin and as part of the preliminary investigation.

At approximately 2:12 a.m. Sunday, the deputy was traveling southbound on Chancellors Run Road in the area of Pegg Road when a pedestrian entered the roadway. The pedestrian was struck by the deputy's vehicle and succumbed to injuries sustained.

The preliminary investigation determined that alcohol and speed did not appear to be contributing factors.

At this time, police say the investigation continues and additional information will be released upon completion of the investigation and a report from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
