Teen Bicyclist Struck by Car Dies of Injuries

LA PLATA, Md. (Aug. 26, 2016)—On Thursday, August 25, during the afternoon hours, Nadine Rafellia Sequinao Leyson, 15, of Waldorf, died as a result of injuries she sustained after being struck by a car on August 24 near the intersection of Middletown Road and Ethridge Drive in Waldorf.

A preliminary investigation showed the driver of a van was traveling north on Middletown Road near Ethridge Drive. Other vehicles were stopped in the left turn lane of Middletown Road, obstructing the view of the driver. As the driver approached the intersection, Leyson entered a marked crosswalk on her bicycle. The driver of the van had insufficient time to react and struck Leyson.

The driver remained on the scene, and Leyson was flown to a hospital.

The Charles County Sheriff's Office Traffic Operations Unit is continuing the investigation.
