Watershed Restoration Public Meeting Scheduled for May 9

The Department of Planning and Growth Management will hold a watershed restoration public meeting on Monday, May 9 at 6 p.m. in the Charles County Government Building (200 Baltimore Street, La Plata). The meeting will cover the draft documents on the Port Tobacco River Watershed Assessment, Mattawoman Creek and Lower Patuxent River Watershed Assessments, and the Charles County Stormwater Restoration Plan.

The Restoration Plan addresses Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDL) with Stormwater Waste Load Allocations including the following: Mattawoman Creek Nutrient TMDL, Lower Patuxent River — Indian Creek Fecal Coliform Bacteria TMDL, Potomac River Tidal Polychlorinated Biphenyl TMDLs, and Chesapeake Bay Nutrient and Sediment TMDL.

These documents will be available at www.charlescountymd.gov/watershed beginning Monday, May 9. Residents wishing to make verbal or written comments are encouraged to attend the public meeting and/or review the plans online. Comments will be accepted until Thursday, June 9.

May 16 Planning Commission Meeting Canceled

The Charles County Planning Commission meeting originally scheduled for Monday, May 16 is canceled.

The next regular meeting of the Planning Commission is scheduled for Monday, June 6 at 6:30 p.m. in the Commissioners' meeting room at the Charles County Government Building (200 Baltimore Street, La Plata).

Indian Head Rail Trail Partial Closures May 9-11

Portions of the Indian Head Rail Trail, from Theodore Green to Route 227, will be closed Monday, May 9 through Wednesday, May 11 for pavement repairs from the pipeline installation. Other portions of the trail will not be affected, and will remain open for public use.

The following portions of the trail will be closed all day on the date indicated:

• Monday, May 9 – Theodore Green to Middletown Road - CLOSED

• Tuesday, May 10 – Middletown Road to Bensville Road - CLOSED

• Wednesday, May 11 – Bensville Road to Route 227 - CLOSED

Repairs will involve the use of heavy equipment and material transport. The closure is necessary to ensure public safety and to expedite completion of repairs.

Department of Health Offers Free Naloxone Overdose Response Training to the Public

The Charles County Department of Health, Division of Substance Use is sponsoring free Naloxone Overdose Response Trainings at the Department of Health office (4545 Crain Highway, White Plains). Trainings are scheduled during the months of May and June on Mondays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Naloxone is a medicine that quickly and effectively reverses an opioid overdose. It is a prescription medication available to people at risk for overdose or for those who are likely to be in a position to witness and respond to one. A Naloxone kit, including medication will be given to each participant at the end of the class.

Elite Gymnastics to Hold Evaluation Day and Open House on May 21

Learn more about the wonderful programs offered at Elite Gymnastics on Saturday, May 21 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Meet and greet our coaches and instructors, take a tour of the facility, and receive individual feedback on the best placement for your child at this free event.

Commissioner-Appointed Board, Committee, and Commission Vacancies Open

The Charles County Commissioners are seeking county residents to fill vacancies on the following boards, committees, and commissions:

• Adult Public Guardianship Review Board

• Alarm Review Board

• Commission for Women

• Disability Review Board- Sheriff's Pension Gaming Permit Review Board

• Heritage Commission

• Historic Preservation Commission

• Homeowner's Association Dispute Review Board

• Library Board of Trustees

There is one vacancy on the Library Board of Trustees. The task of the Board is to deal with all aspects of the library, including services, staff, rules and regulations and other functions for the proper delivery of library services.

There is one vacancy on the Disability Review Board — Sheriff's Pension. This Board is tasked with accepting and reviewing applications in accordance with the Sheriff Disability Pension Plan and making a determination as to the extent of disability and benefit payment in accordance with the Plan.

Exhibitor Opportunities for Celebrate Charles: A Fun-Filled Fourth

The Charles County Office of Tourism invites local businesses, artisans, and food establishments to participate in the "Best of Charles County" showcase at the 2016 Celebrate Charles: A Fun-Filled Fourth, a family-friendly event that drew more than 10,000 people last year. A Fun-Filled Fourth will be held on Monday, July 4, from 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Regency Furniture Stadium (11765 St. Linus Drive, Waldorf).

Artisans, crafters, and food vendors are invited to sell goods, and showcase their talents. Spaces are available for $10. Commissioner Stewart's Town Hall Meeting Rescheduled to June 13

Commissioner Amanda Stewart, M.Ed. (District 3) Town Hall Meeting previously scheduled for Monday, May 2 has been rescheduled to Monday, June 13. The public is invited to attend. The purpose of town hall meetings is to take questions from those in attendance and discuss items important to the citizens and the community.
