LA PLATA, Md. (Dec. 12, 2013)—The Charles County Sheriff's Office today released the following incident and arrest reports.
BURGLARY: On Dec. 12 at 9:53 a.m., officers responded to the 6700 block of Indian Head Highway in Bryans Road for a burglary in progress. A relative called 911 and reported his grandmother contacted him and said someone had just broken into her house. She said she heard noises at the front of her house and when she checked, the front door had been opened. She shut the door but was startled to find a man in the back of her house. The suspect fled upon being noticed. Officers arrived and searched the house and a police K9 team conducted a track. Nothing was stolen from the residence and the scene was processed. MAN CHARGED WITH FIRST-DEGREE ASSAULT: On Dec. 11 at 10 p.m., officers responded to the area of Dorchester Circle and Sauger Court in Waldorf for a reported fight. When officers arrived, they located a 44-year-old male standing near the roadway; he had several stab wounds. The suspect, James Macauthur Spears, 44, of Waldorf, was nearby. The victim was flown to a hospital with injuries that were later determined to be non life-threatening. The suspect was arrested on the scene. Investigation showed the suspect and victim - who are known to each other - had an ongoing dispute and during the argument, Spears stabbed the victim. Spears was charged with first-degree assault and is being held the Charles County Detention Center. Officer J. Morales made the arrest.
BURGLARIES: On Dec. 11 at 3 p.m., officers responded to the 2600 block of Winbrell Court in Waldorf for a burglary. The homeowner said she left her house earlier in the day and when she returned, several computers had been stolen. The homeowner also said she had not locked the doors. At about 9 p.m., officers received a call from a resident in the 2800 block of Moorhen Court who said two computers had been stolen from his house. Officers responded and located pry marks to the basement door. Officers canvassed the neighborhood and learned two males were observed earlier knocking on the victim's front door. When no one answered, the suspects walked behind the house. Officers are looking into the possibility the cases are related and they are pursuing additional leads. HEAT PUMP STOLEN: On Dec. 11 between 1:15 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., someone stole a heat pump from a house in the 9800 block of Beech Lane in La Plata. Anyone with information is asked to call PFC M.J. Sokoloff at (301) 932-2222.
BURGLARY: On Dec. 11 at 1:11 a.m., PFC J. Clagett responded to the Shell/Dunkin Donuts at 3510 Crain Highway in Waldorf for an intrusion alarm. Once on the scene, PFC Clagett observed the drive-thru window had been shattered. PFC L. Blake and his K9 partner, Max, searched the building but the suspect was gone. It appears the suspect stole several packs of cigarettes. The suspect is a white male wearing a black hooded shirt, blue jeans and white tennis shoes. ATV STOLEN: Sometime between Dec. 9 and Dec. 10, someone stole an orange, 2000 Honda Rancher ATV from the front yard of a house in the 8600 block of Mulberry Grove Place in Port Tobacco. Charles County Crime Solvers is offering a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call PFC A.
