Redistricting Board to Hold Special Teleconference Meeting

The 2013 Redistricting Board of Directors will meet on Thursday, November 21 at 4:30 pm, via conference call.

The purpose of the teleconference is to vote on the written form of the adopted redistricting plan for St. Mary's County. The conference call will be broadcast in the Commissioners Meeting Room inside the Chesapeake Building, located at 41770 Baldridge Street in Leonardtown.

Members of the public are invited to attend.

St. Mary's County Department of Recreation and Parks Announces Youth Basketball Registration

Registration is now open for the St. Mary's County Department of Recreation & Parks' 2013-2014 winter youth basketball program. The program is designed to teach and enhance basketball knowledge and skills in a recreational and fun atmosphere for children in Grades 3-8.

Practices are held once per week beginning mid-December. Games are played on Saturdays at select St. Mary's County Public Schools beginning January 4, 2014. Participation fee is just $80!

Registration deadlines are as follows:

-- Co-Ed Instructional (Grades 1-2) - walk-in registration ends November 27 at 5:00 p.m. Online registration ends December 1 at 11:59 p.m.

-- Co-Ed Developmental (Grades 3-4) - registration ends November 24 at 5:00 p.m.

-- Recreational Basketball (Grades 5-8) - registration ends November 24 at 5:00 p.m.

-- Single day registration for 9 & 10 Grade Youth Basketball will be held December 5 at Margaret Brent Middle School from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tryouts will be held immediately thereafter, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Economic Development Commission Application Deadline Extended

The original November 15 deadline for individuals to apply for the newly formed Economic Development Commission, has been extended to December 2 at 5:00 p.m.

The Board of County Commissioners authorized the establishment of the St. Mary's County Economic Development Commission (SMCEDC). The commission will guide the development and implementation of a comprehensive economic development strategy intended to broaden the local economy. Individuals with relevant experience are sought to serve on the SMCEDC.

The SMCEDC will be an appointed body, whose members will meet in public on a routine basis and will serve terms of three years. The Commission will be staffed by the County's Department of Economic and Community Development. Ideal candidates will have private industry experience in technology transfer, defense, retail and service, workforce, tourism and agriculture development or related businesses. Individuals with extensive knowledge about growing and supporting entrepreneurship, who are willing to lend their expertise to the goal of transforming the County's economy to support a wider income spectrum and greater diversity of workforce skills and attributes, would be especially welcome.
