Lusby Man Charged with Arson of Dwelling


CALVERT COUNTY, Md. (September 5, 2013)—Deputy State Fire Marshals charged Jarel A. Stepney, age 24, with arson involving a fire that occurred on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at 139 Cove Point Road in Lusby. The 2:42 p.m. fire caused an estimated $190,000 damage to the single family dwelling owned by Louise Logan.

The one alarm fire took approximately 45 firefighters from Solomons, St. Leonard, Prince Frederick, and Bay District Volunteer Fire Departments nearly 40 minutes to control. No injuries were reported during the incident.

Investigators determined Stepney set three separate fires inside the dwelling using ordinary combustibles. He was served an arrest warrant for 1st Degree Arson at the Calvert County Detention Center where he was being held on related charges by the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Team Calvert Investigative Team (CIT) from the same incident. A motive for the fire has not been established at this time.
