DNR Certifies New Clean Marina in Calvert

ANNAPOLIS—KB Derr & Son, an independent marina and boatyard in Lusby, is the newest certified Maryland Clean Marina.

“I decided to go for the award after I attended a Clean Marina workshop last winter,” said Owner Justin Derr. “I realized I would rather be proactive and adopt the best practices and permits for the industry.”

The boatyard was already using dustless sanders and recycling used oil and antifreeze. However, to meet the award criteria, they covered and enclosed recycling tanks, added fuel-spill response equipment, and developed a system that collects all wastewater from washing boat bottoms. The office also provides its customers with pollution prevention information through mailings.

“KB Derr & Son demonstrated a real commitment to the Clean Marina program,” said Program Coordinator Donna Morrow. “From attending the workshop, hosting a site visit with Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) staff, and quickly implementing all of the agency’s recommendations, Justin and his crew have shown us they really want to protect our waterways and run a professional, clean marina and boatyard.”

This is the 125th certified Maryland Clean Marina. There are a total of 149 certified facilities in the State, including 24 smaller partners. The businesses have adopted a significant portion of recommendations in the Maryland Clean Marina Guidebook and passed rigorous site inspections. DNR staff re-inspect the facilities every three years. Marinas and boatyards of any size may participate.

DNR oversees the Clean Marina Initiative, a voluntary program that promotes and celebrates efforts of marinas, boatyards and yacht clubs to reduce their pollution.
