Two Charged with Oyster Harvesting Violations in St. Mary's


ANNAPOLIS (January 12, 2012)—The Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) released the following incident and arrest reports. NRP is the enforcement arm of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). NRP is the only police force aside from the Maryland State Police that has statewide jurisdiction.

POSSESSION OF UNDERSIZED OYSTERS: NRP charged Robert S. Nelson, Jr., 29 of Mechanicsville, with possession of undersized oysters after receiving a tip that Nelson was selling undersized oysters in the Mechanicsville area of St. Mary’s County. On January 5, Officers located and stopped Nelson’s vehicle and found a bushel of oysters where 30 percent were undersized.

HARVESTING OYSTERS IN A POLLUTED AREA: NRP charged Ronald F. Welch with harvesting oysters in a polluted area on January 6 at 11 a.m. Welch was seen harvesting oysters in a polluted area on St. Inigoes Creek and NRP was notified.
