State Fire Marshal Hires Fire Protection Engineer for So. Md.

PIKESVILLE, Md. (January 23, 2011) – State Fire Marshal William E. Barnard has filled the vacant Fire Protection Engineer position in the Southern Regional Office that was created when FPE Andrew Schneider left state service to work in the private sector. Derek Murgatroyd was hired this month to work with Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s County officials in the review and approval of building plans for new and renovated buildings. Murgatroyd will have final approval over all plans to ensure compliance with state fire codes.

After graduating in 2003 from Delaware Technical and Community College in Fire Protection Engineer Technology, Murgatroyd attended the University of Maryland and graduated in 2007 from the Fire Protection Engineering program. After graduation he worked as a Fire Protection Engineer in the private sector. He will work in the Southern Regional Office which is located in the Louis L.Goldstein Building in Prince Frederick. However, he will spend a considerable amount of time meeting with county officials on code issues in each of the three counties.

After welcoming Murgatroyd to the staff of the Office of the State Fire Marshal, Chief Fire Protection Engineer Larry Iseminger stated, “Fire Marshal William Barnard and I are extremely fortunate to have Derek join our staff. His training and experience will be an asset to the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the citizens of southern Maryland.”
