FLEEING POLICE/TRAFFIC FATALITY: The Charles County Sheriffs Office is investigating a single-vehicle crash that occurred Jan. 14 at 12:15 a.m. as the driver was attempting to elude police. Officer R. Johnson observed a vehicle whose driver he believed might have been intoxicated and attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver accelerated, refusing to stop. Other officers, including Maryland State Police troopers, responded and deployed stop-sticks in an attempt to stop the SUV. Just south of VFW Road, the fleeing driver swerved to avoid stop sticks but lost control of the SUV and struck a light pole in the median at the intersection. The driver died at the scene. He was later identified as Tilton Dwight McDonald, 40, of Hyattsville. The initial crash investigation indicates alcohol and speed were factors in the crash. An investigation into his identity revealed his license was suspended and revoked and he was wanted in Prince Georges and Anne Arundel counties. Officer R. Taylor of the Traffic Operations Unit is investigating the crash.
