Charles Co. Students Participate in Fall Chess Tournament

LA PLATA, Md. (November 5, 2010)—More than 90 students competed in the Charles County Public Schools annual Fall Chess Tournament held Oct. 23 at Westlake High School. The tournament is sponsored by the school system and is open to any county resident in grades K-12.

The tournament follows a Swiss-style format in which each student plays four games. Students competed in five grade-level divisions and trophies were awarded to first- and second-place winners. Other students received medals for placing in their division. The number of medals awarded in a division is determined by the number of participants in that group.

The following students were winners in their division.

Grades kindergarten through second:

— Ryan Gandee, first place, second grade, Dr. Thomas L. Higdon Elementary School;

— Jalen Morrow, second place, second grade, Arthur Middleton Elementary School;

— Joseph Papagno, third place, second grade, Walter J. Mitchell Elementary School; and

— Jack Glassman, fourth place, second grade, Mary H. Matula Elementary School.

Grades third and fourth:

— Jarrett Mulloy, first place, fourth grade, Higdon;

— Ali Ramamni, second place, third grade, Middleton;

— James Tabourne, third place, fourth grade, Eva Turner Elementary School;

— Sterling Moorehead, fourth place, fourth grade, Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy Elementary School;

— Christopher Rand-Crawford, fifth place, third grade, T.C. Martin Elementary School;

— Matthew Moses, sixth place, third grade, Berry Elementary School;

— Adolf Accad, seventh place, fourth grade, William B. Wade Elementary School; and

— Jonathan Heng, eighth place, fourth grade, Wade.

Grades fifth and sixth:

— Kathryn Tonucci, first place, sixth grade, Theodore G. Davis Middle School;

— James Wash II, tied for first place, sixth grade, Davis;

— Kahlil Moore-Stone, third place, sixth grade, Mattawoman Middle School;

— Maxwell Palmer, fourth place, sixth grade, John Hanson Middle School;

— Kevin Rohrbaugh, fifth place, fifth grade, William A. Diggs Elementary School;

— Luke Vandegrift, sixth place, fifth grade, Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy;

— Tracey Easton, seventh place, sixth grade, Hanson;

— Luke Roberts, eighth place, sixth grade, Hanson;

— Sarah Deresky, tied for eighth place, fifth grade, Matula;

— Noah McElroy, ninth place, sixth grade, Davis;

— Kenneth Day, tenth place, fifth grade, Dr. Gustavus Brown Elementary School; and

— Griffin Mindick, eleventh place, sixth grade, General Smallwood Middle School.

Grades seventh and eighth:

— Scott Skinner, first place, eighth grade, Mattawoman;

— Antonio Miguelez, second place, eighth grade, Milton M. Somers Middle School;

— Marzell Tabourne, third place, eighth grade, Benjamin Stoddert Middle School;

— Franklin Olmsted, tied for third place, seventh grade, Somers; and

— Reed Lundegard, fourth place, seventh grade, Somers.

Grades ninth through twelfth:

— Austin Newhart, first place, sophomore, La Plata High School;

— Alexander Armstrong, second place, junior, Thomas Stone High School; and

— James Hoover, third place, sophomore, Henry E. Lackey High School.

Felix Cummings served as tournament director and the number of awarded places was based on the number of participants in each division.
