PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. (October 27, 2010)—A Huntingtown teen was sent to a Washington hospital after a serious single vehicle accident this afternoon. The boy was identified as Zachary Robert Smith, age 18. Smith sustained life threatening injuries during the collision. Smith remains in critical but stable condition as of 5:00 p.m. Wednesday.

The accident occurred on Emmanuel Church Road in the area of Deer Run Court in Calvert County around 1:05 p.m.

Police who responded to the accident found a 2004 Honda Civic off the roadway in the wood line. Smith was the only occupant in the vehicle.

Smith was extricated from the vehicle by emergency rescue workers and transported to the Calvert Memorial Hospital. He was subsequently transferred to Washington Hospital Center - MedStar.

The preliminary investigation by police revealed that Smith was traveling north bound on Emmanuel Church Road approaching Deer Run Court when he lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle entered a clockwise rotation and left the roadway. Upon leaving the roadway, the vehicle struck a tree with the primary impact concentrated on the driver's door.

Police say speed appears to be a contributing factor in the collision.

The collision remains under investigation by Cpl. J. Wahlgren of the Calvert County Sheriff's Office Crash Reconstruction Team.
