Calvert Honors 'Beautiful' People at Annual Volunteer Awards Event

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. (Sept. 25, 2010) -– The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) honored 26 outstanding community volunteers during the county’s annual Calvert You Are Beautiful program September 21. St. Leonard resident Wanda Hassler was named Volunteer of the Year for her years of work as a Volunteer Victim’s Advocate.

The Calvert You Are Beautiful nominees touched the lives of county residents in myriad ways, including through organizations such as 4-H, Patuxent Habitat for Humanity and the American Chestnut Land Trust. Others were recognized for dedicating countless hours to working for local causes while juggling the demands of everyday life.

The 2010 Calvert You Are Beautiful nominees are:

-- Stan Benning, for his work with the American Chestnut Land Trust

-- Paul Berry, for his work with the American Chestnut Land Trust

-- Cheri Campbell, for her work with Patuxent Habitat for Humanity

-- Martha Canfield, for her work with the Rotary Club of Prince Frederick, the Interact Club at Patuxent High School and Asbury-Solomons Island retirement community

-- Garrett Carter, for his work with the Arc of Southern Maryland, Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum, Patuxent Habitat for Humanity and Morgan State University

-- Larry Carter, for his work with Patuxent Habitat for Humanity

-- Bob Douglass, for his work with the American Chestnut Land Trust

-- Sally Douglass, for her work with Patuxent Habitat for Humanity

-- Patricia Eddleman, for her work at Calvert Memorial Hospital, the Calvert County Health Department and Relay for Life

-- Nancy Favor, for her work with Patuxent Habitat for Humanity

-- Wanda Hassler, for her work as a Volunteer Victim’s Advocate

-- K. Kay Hoile, for work with the 4-H youth development programs

-- Norma Imershein, for her work with University of Maryland’s Master Gardener programs

-- Michael Kent, for his work with the Calvert County Literacy Council, local food pantries, 4-H clubs, the Calvert County NAACP and the Census Complete Count Committee

-- Jeff Klapper, for his work with the American Chestnut Land Trust

-- Alexander “Al” Lavish, for his work with the Calvert Marine Museum

-- Kathleen Mickley, for her work with University of Maryland’s Master Gardener programs

-- Ginny Murphy, for her work with the American Chestnut Land Trust

-- Arnie Petty, for his work with the American Chestnut Land Trust

-- Sheila Poole, for her work with the Bayside Unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maryland

-- Janice Rodgers, for her work with the American Chestnut Land Trust

-- Ken Romney, for his work with the American Chestnut Land Trust

-- Spiggy & Friends Committee, for charity fundraising through the annual Spiggy and Friends Celebrity Golf Tournament

-- John Wagner, for his work with Patuxent Habitat for Humanity

-- Raymond T. (“RT”) West, for his work with University of Maryland’s Master Gardener programs

-- Thomas R. Zinn, for his work with the Calvert County Watermen’s Association

Volunteer of the Year winner Wanda Hassler was honored for helping victims of domestic violence and sexual assault over the past decade. She volunteers over 100 hours each month and responds to emergency crises at all hours of the day. Tara Pavao of the Calvert County Health Department Crisis Intervention Center said in her nomination that “Wanda Hassler is a great role model to other volunteers in demonstrating that life is not about what you get, it is about what you give.”

Hassler received a special certificate and a gift basket from the BOCC at the Calvert You Are Beautiful awards ceremony. The other Calvert You Are Beautiful nominees each received a certificate and a small gift.

Judges for the Calvert You Are Beautiful program were Keri Lipperini of the Calvert County Office on Aging, Carrie Lovejoy of The Recorder, Marty Madden of the Calvert Independent, Sandra O. Martin of Bay Weekly and Mike Short of the Voice of Southern Maryland.
