Teen with Gun Reported Suicidal, Situation Ends w/o Violence

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. (August 26, 2010)—David Allen Roberts, 19, of Prince Frederick, was arrested on Wednesday after a lengthy confrontation with police in the Prince Frederick area. A female had called police and said Roberts was entering the woods armed with a shotgun. The caller also told police Roberts was suicidal, and she believed he was going to harm himself.

At about 1:00 p.m., units from the Calvert County Sheriff's Office responded to the area of 141 Armory Road in response to the call and established a perimeter. Police also notified Calvert County Public Schools and advised them of the situation. The new Calvert Middle School, the nearby Calvert High School, and the Calvert Technology Academy were all placed on lock-down throughout the incident.

Police say they negotiated with the Roberts via cell phone for a lengthy period of time. During negotiations, police say Roberts fired one shot in an unknown direction from an unknown location in the woods adjacent to the Fox Run Shopping Center.

Police say Roberts continued to negotiate and ultimately surrendered without incident to Sheriff's Office personnel in the front yard of a residence on Dares Beach Road. He was taken into custody and transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

Sheriff's Office K9 units recovered the shotgun in the woods behind the Fox Run Shopping Center.

Roberts has been charged with reckless endangerment and possession of drug paraphernalia, a pipe.
