Illegal Immigrant Drowns in Potomac


SCOTLAND, Md. (August 24, 2010)—Favian Martinez, between 18 and 20, of Frederick, drowned in the Potomac River at Point Lookout State Park on Saturday, August 21 around 2:40 pm, according to the Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP). A relative at the scene did not know his exact age. Martinez was identified as an illegal immigrant from Guatemala.

Police say Martinez was was swimming in the river when he disappeared below the surface of the water. Martinez was found several minutes later by life guards who immediately began CPR. He was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown by ambulance where he was pronounced deceased.

The Maryland Natural Resources Police Special Operation Division is investigating. No foul play is suspected.
