Charles County Sheriff's Reports


LA PLATA, Md. (June 16, 2010) - The Charles County Sheriff's Office released the following incident and arrest reports.

SHERIFF'S OFFICERS CONDUCT D.U.I. CHECK POINT: On June 12 at 11 p.m., Charles County Sheriff's Officers conducted a DUI check point in the area of Leonardtown Road at Deborah Drive in Waldorf. Three people were charged with DUI, 2 people were charged with possession of drugs, 24 traffic citations, 10 equipment repair orders and 8 warnings were issued. A total of 636 vehicles passed through the checkpoint.

CUSTOM MOTORCYCLE STOLEN: Between May 26 - May 28, an unknown suspect stole a custom, 2006 Suzuki GSXR 1000 motorcycle from a trailer in the 4400 block of Livingston Road in Bryans Road. The bike is orange and black and has a "Superman" logo on the rear seat. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective D. Gross at 301-609-6488.

OFFICERS ARREST MAN WITH DRUGS: On June 12 at 4 p.m., officers observed a man smoking marijuana in the 3300 block of Leonardtown Road in Waldorf. As officers approached the suspect, he tried to hide a plastic bag containing marijuana. Officers arrested Johnny Sidbury, 34, of Washington, D.C., and charged him with possession of marijuana. Officer Yates made the arrest.

MAN CHARGED WITH FLEEING AND ELUDING: On June 10 at 10:24 p.m., a Charles County Sheriff's officer initiated a traffic stop in the 7000 block of Hawthorne Road in La Plata after observing a car speeding. The driver refused to stop and turned down a driveway where he jumped out of the car and ran through the woods. The officer pursued the man on foot and apprehended him about a quarter mile away. The driver, Jason Shawn Smoot, 26, of Pomfret, told officers he fled because his driver's license was suspended. Officer Brooks charged Smoot with fleeing and eluding and driving with a suspended license.

MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT INVOLVING SCHOOL BUS/NO INJURIES: On June 10 at 3:30 p.m., officers responded to Leonardtown Road at St. Charles Parkway in Waldorf for the report of a hit and run collision involving a loaded school bus in which no injuries were reported. The driver of a small, silver passenger car struck the bus and fled. There was minor damage to the bus. Officers checked the area for the striking vehicle but the driver was not located. Officer Mayhew is investigating.
