La Plata Man Dies After Turning into Path of Large Truck


LA PLATA, Md. (Jan. 22, 2010)—King W. Mungai, 25, of La Plata, passed away at 4:13 a.m. Friday morning at Prince George's Shock Trauma due to injuries received in a traffic accident Thursday around 7:07 p.m.

According to Maryland State Police investigators, Mungai was attempting to make a left onto Mitchell Road from northbound US Route 301 in Charles County while driving his 2009 Toyota Corolla. A 2010 Freightliner truck, driven by Gordon Scott Barnes, 43, of Connelly Springs, N.C. was traveling southbound on US Route 301 at Mitchell Road. Mungai failed to yield the right of way to the truck and was subsequently struck.

Barnes was not injured. No charges were filed against Barnes.

Mungai was initially transported to Prince George's Shock Trauma by MSP Helicopter Trooper 2.

The investigation was conducted by Trooper Scarlett of the La Plata Barrack.
