North Point, Westlake Indoor Track Teams Earn State Titles


LA PLATA, Md. (April 3, 2009)—The North Point and Westlake high school boys' indoor track teams were recently named the 2009 Maryland State Champions in the 2A and 3A divisions through the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSA). The North Point team earned an overall score of 65, calculated from 13 events, and the Westlake team earned an overall score of 50.

The teams competed at the state indoor track meet held Feb. 16-17 at the Prince George's County Sports Complex.

Also earning state titles at the meet was the North Point boys' 4x200 meter relay team and the girls' 4x400 meter relay team. North Point senior Lauren Gross won the state title in the girls' shot-put event, and Geranda Williams, also a senior at North Point, earned the state title in the 55-meter hurdle event.

Westlake seniors Jonathan Harper and Devon Smith, and juniors Julian Blair and Courtney Jarvis won the state title in the boys' 4x200 relay race. Harper also earned a state title in the boys' shot put event, and Smith earned additional state titles in the 55-meter and 300-meter dash races.

Thomas Stone High School senior Trae Proctor also won the state 4A division title in the boys' 55-meter hurdle event.

These students will be recognized for their accomplishments by the Board of Education at its April 14 meeting.
