100 Md. Youth Ask Hoyer to Support Climate Legislation

Hoyer agrees to a global warming-themed town hall meeting with Md. students in April

WASHINGTON (March 8, 2009) — One hundred Maryland youth met with House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer Monday, March 2, to lobby for bold climate legislation. The lobby meeting was part of the historic “Power Shift '09” climate conference that brought 12,000 students to Washington to demand that the U.S. "lead the world with a cleaner, greener, and more innovative energy policy." Over 600 students attending the Power Shift ’09 conference came from Maryland.

Students attending the meeting asked Rep. Hoyer if he supported the four following principles: Cut carbon immediately and dramatically; invest in a green economy; power the future with clean energy, not dirty fuels; and lead the world to a clean and equitable energy future.

“Congressman Hoyer seemed receptive to the principles,” said Jonathen Facemire, a student at the University of Maryland. “It was very encouraging that he agreed to continue the dialogue at a global warming town hall meeting and I look forward to hearing his thoughts on climate legislation, clean energy, and, ultimately, my future.”

Students hope to hold the town hall meeting in April, during the Congressional recess.

The meeting with Rep. Hoyer was one of over 400 similar meetings held the same day with Congressional representatives from all 50 states.

Md. students also met with Senators Mikulski and Cardin and Representatives Bartlett, Ruppersberger, Van Hollen, Cummings and Sarbanes.

Maryland schools that attended Power Shift ‘09 included: University of Md.-College Park, Walter Johnson High School, Sandy Spring Friend School, Albert Einstein High School, Hood College, Johns Hopkins University, Towson State University, Carroll Community College, Maret School, University of Md.-Baltimore County, US Naval Academy, National Cathedral School, St Mary's College of Md., Loyola College, Columbia Union College, Salisbury State University, Montgomery College, College of Southern Md., Md.
