Man Dead, Wife Critical After Being Hit Head On


CALLAWAY, Md. (July 25, 2009)—A Tall Timbers man is dead and his wife was flown to an area hospital in critical condition after their car was struck head on just after midnight by a 2008 Ford F-450 dual wheel pick up truck, operated by George Michael Bowes Jr., 31, of Callaway. The deceased is Russell Edward Wenzel, age 58. The other passenger in the car was identified as his wife, Melissa Anne Wenzel, age 58.

Police say that on Saturday at 12:08 a.m., Bowes was traveling north on Piney Point Road in the area of Happyland Road in Valley Lee when his truck crossed the centerline into the south bound lane of Piney Point Road and collided head on with the Wenzel's 2009 Audi A4 sedan.

Michael Bowes and Russell Wenzel were transported to St. Mary's Hospital where Mr. Wenzel died of his injuries.

Melissa Wenzel was transported by Trooper 7 to Prince Georges Shock Trama Center with critical injuries.

The ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Sheriff's Office Collision Reconstruction Team.
