River Concert Series: Romantic Masterpieces on July 24

Featuring the Chesapeake Orchestra with Guest Italian Pianist Maurizio Moretti

ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. (July 20, 2009) — Masterworks of the Romantic Period highlight performances by the Chesapeake Orchestra, directed by Jeffrey Silberschlag, and renowned Italian pianist Maurizio Moretti at the St. Mary’s College of Maryland (SMCM) River Concert Series Friday, July 24. Every Friday through July, the college’s summer evening entertainment will feature world-class music and food from local vendors. Gates open at 5 p.m. and concerts start at 7 p.m.

The concert will begin with Rossini’s humorous “La gazza ladra Overture, and also features Moretti performing Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1 and Strauss’ powerful tone poem about a hero’s life, “Ein Heldenleben.”

Moretti is artistic director of both the International Chamber Music Festival of the Roman Theater of Nora and the Ente Musicale di Nuoro, as well as full professor of pianoforte at the Conservatorio di Musica in Cagliari. He performs regularly in the most famous concert music halls of Europe; and his ability to combine perfect technique, interpretation, and Italian charm brings audiences to their feet.

Related events, the River Concert Series Plus, will show the film “On the Town” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, in the College’s Cole Cinema followed by a performance by Audrey Hamilton ’08 and her jazz and blues combo. And enjoy Rick Humphreys and his jazz trio at Vincenzo’s Mediterranean Grill restaurant at Solomons at 6:30 p.m. July 25.

The goal of the River Concert Series is to assist in enhancing the region and cultivating a cultural tourist destination by organizing arts and historical offerings. In 1999, the Chesapeake Orchestra began a residency relationship with SMCM with the initiation of the River Concert Series. Since then, the Chesapeake Orchestra has sought to provide musical programming to reach the broadest possible audience.

The concerts are free and open to the public, and picnic baskets are welcome. For more information, visit the River Concert Series Web site at www.riverconcertseries.com.
