Governor, Entourage Make Calvert County 'Capital for a Day'


PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. (June 19, 2009) – Governor Martin O’Malley is being joined today by Lt. Governor Anthony Brown, Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr, members of the Executive Cabinet, County Commission President Wilson Parran, other local officials, and area residents to declare Calvert County Maryland’s “Capital for a Day.” The monthly program launched by Governor O’Malley in 2007 brings the State Capital to every corner of Maryland through a series of events across a diverse selection of Maryland cities, towns and communities.

Governor O’Malley and Senate President Miller started off the day by hosting a prayer brunch with Calvert County faith leaders at the North Beach Volunteer Fire Hall.

Governor O’Malley was then scheduled to visit Calvert Memorial Hospital and participate in the ribbon cutting for the Calvert Medical Arts Center.

After lunch, Governor O’Malley is scheduled to Tour Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum in St. Leonard.

Later tonight, the governor is headed to St. Mary's City where his band, “O’Malley’s March” will close the St. Mary’s River Concert.

In addition to Governor O’Malley’s official schedule, members of the Executive Cabinet were scheduled to meet throughout the region with their respective local counterparts:

Maryland Veterans Administration & Maryland Military Department:

-- General James Adkins will be performing an Armory Inspection Prince Frederick

Department of Juvenile Justice:

-- Secretary Don Devore will be participating in a Public Safety roundtable

Department of Housing and Community Development:

-- Secretary Ray Skinner will attend a meeting with the Southern Maryland Tri-County Community Action Committee.

-- Secretary Skinner will also attend a lunch meeting with Calvert County Department of Community Resources.

Department of Natural Resources:

-- Secretary John Griffin will meet with local Planning officials, visit with local Charter Fishing stakeholders, and meet with the Mayors of Chesapeake Beach & North Beach.

Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services:

-- Secretary Gary Maynard to attend a Public Safety roundtable discussion at the County court house with local law enforcement officials.

Department of Agriculture:

-- Secretary Buddy Hance will spend his day with Governor O’Malley as he tours Calvert, Secretary Hance’s home county.

Department of Labor, Licences, and Regulation - Deputy Secretary Leonard Howie (Perez not attending):

-- Deputy Secretary Leonard Howie will meet with Marjorie Zimmerman, Director of Adult Education for Calvert County, and Ellen Flowers-Fields, WIA director for Southern Maryland One Stop Center.

Department of Human Resources:

-- Secretary Brenda Donald will lead a discussion of key program and operational issues by the Calvert County DSS Administrative Council and Members of the Calvert County DSS Advisory Board.

-- Secretary Donald will also attend a facility tour of Calvert County DSS and have lunch with Administrative Council and Advisory Board Members in Prince Frederick

Department of Aging:

-- Secretary Gloria Gary Lawlah will tour Southern Pines Senior Center and meet with Southern Pines Senior Council Members, Meals on Wheels volunteers, center staff, and participants.

-- Secretary Lawlah will also meet AAA Management Staff, Commission on Aging, and have lunch with entertainment provided by Clare O’Shea.

Department of Business and Economic Development:

-- Secretary Christian Johansson will tour Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, and have lunch in Prince Frederick with County Commissioners and State representatives.

Department of Budget and Management:

-- Deputy Secretary David Romans will attend a tour of Capital Projects with County Officials, including Calvert High School, Prince Frederick Aquatic Center, County Detention Center, College of Southern Maryland, Prince Frederick Campus - Phase II Campus Development.

-- Deputy Secretary Romans will also hold a working lunch with:

--- Terry L. Shannon, Acting County Administrator and Director of Finance and Budget

--- Sharon Strand, Capital Projects Coordinator, Office of Budget and Finance

Department of Information Technology:

-- Secretary Elliott Schlanger will meet with Joe Klausner, Technology Services Director, Calvert County Government, through the morning.

Maryland Higher Education Commission:

-- Secretary James Lyons will meet with College of Southern Maryland President Dr. Brad Gottfried at the Prince Frederick campus of CSM, along with Acting Prince Frederick campus dean Dr. Irvin Clarke, members of CSM’s board of trustees and CSM students.
-- Secretary Lyons will also meet with Dr. Margaret Palmer, head of the University of Maryland’s Center for Environmental Science’s Chesapeake Biological Laboratory in Solomons Island, and tour the facility.

Department of Health and Mental Hygiene:

-- Secretary John Colmers will meet with senior staff of the Calvert County Health Department and tour the facility.

-- Secretary Colmers will also join Governor O’Malley at Calvert Memorial Hospital ribbon cutting, as well as hold a lunch meeting with James Xinis, CMH President/CEO.

Maryland State Department of Education:

-- State Superintendent Dr. Nancy Grasmick will be visiting a new Maryland Green School, Windy Hill Elementary, and will speak with students and educators about their environmental projects. She will be accompanied by Calvert County Superintendent Jack Smith, and she will have lunch with Dr. Smith after her visit to Windy Hill.

Department of Planning:

-- Secretary Rich Hall will be meeting with local planning officials, including Greg Bowen at Calvert County Planning in Prince Frederick.

-- Secretary Hall and Mr. Bowen will tour Prince Frederick and meet over lunch.

-- Secretary Hall and Department of Environment Secretary Wilson to hold press event at site of Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum’s new nutrient reduction septic system and then the park and museum’s shoreline erosion project.

Department of Transportation:

-- Acting Secretary Beverley K. Swaim-Staley will visit the Chesapeake Streetscape Project, as well as the reconstruction of MD 2/4.

-- After a working lunch, Acting Secretary Swain-Staley will visit a project in the Chesapeake Church Parking Lot.

Department of Disabilities:

-- Secretary Cathy Raggio will visit the Arc of Southern Maryland clients at their workplaces including: Nick’s (grocery store), Calvert Memorial Hospital, Capital Foods and World Gym in Prince Frederick.

-- Secretary Raggio will also meet Arc client working at Jefferson Patterson Park obtaining biology samples for university study.

Maryland State Police

-- Secretary Terrance B. Sheridan to attend Public Safety roundtable at the County Office Building

Maryland Department of Environment:

-- Secretary Shari Wilson will present working model of an enhanced nutrient removal (ENR) septic system after cabinet meeting at a media event following the Cabinet Meeting.

-- Secretary Wilson will also meet with the Mayors of Chesapeake Beach & North Beach

Secretary of State:

-- Secretary John McDonough will meet with union representatives at Jerry’s Place in Prince Frederick

-- Secretary McDonough will also meet with Administration, faculty, staff, involved in international programs and exchanges. Meeting attendees will include:

--- Dr. Bradley Gottfried, CSM President, or designee

--- Ms. Gladys Jones, Director, Administrative Services (Liberia)

--- Professor Rex Bishop, Faculty, Business, Economics, and Legal Studies (Estonia)

Governor’s Office of Minority Affairs:

-- Special Secretary Luwanda Jenkins will meet with Southern Maryland Consortium
