SMECO Directors Elect Officers for 2008-2009


HUGHESVILLE, Md. (Oct. 1, 2008)—Members of the Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) Board of Directors recently chose their officers for 2008-2009.

Joseph V. Stone, Jr. of St. Mary's County was elected Chairman. Stone has been a SMECO Board member since 1996. He received his National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) Credentialed Cooperative Director Certificate in 1999. He owns Joe Stone Insurance Agency and serves the community through his membership with the 7th District Optimist Club. Stone is also past chairman of the Bay Country Cooperative Committee.

Samuel "Jack" Hammett of Calvert County was elected Vice Chairman. Hammett has served as a SMECO Board member since 1990. He received his NRECA Credentialed Cooperative Director Certificate and Board Leadership Certificate in 1999. Hammett is the owner of Hammett's Building Services. He is secretary of the Calvert County Plumbing Commission and is a member and past president of the Calvert County Lions Club.

Kenneth L. Dyson of Charles County was elected Secretary-Treasurer. Dyson, a SMECO Board member since 1974, is a realtor with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. He has been active in the community as past president of the Mechanicsville Lions Club, past district deputy governor of the Lions Club District 22C, and past director of the Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department; he is also a former trustee of Physicians Memorial (Civista) Hospital.

Fern G. Brown of Charles County was elected Assistant Secretary-Treasurer. Brown has been a Board member since 2003. She is the domestic violence coordinator for Charles County Circuit Court and a National Certified Court Advocate. Certified as a Victim Assistance Specialist, Trauma Stress Services specialist, and Capital Area Crisis Response Specialist, Brown is also a member of the Charles County Commission for Women, the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence, and the Charles County Family Violence Coordinator Committee. She serves as a Charles County Board of Elections Supervisor.
