Charles County Names Acting Director of Planning

LA PLATA, Md. (Oct. 16, 2007)—The Charles County Commissioners announced the appointment of Joseph Reed Faasen, of Charlotte Hall, as the Acting Director of Planning for the Planning & Growth Management (PGM) Department. Faasen will assume his role on October 15, 2007.

Faasen is currently Planning Manager for the Department of Planning and Growth Management and responsible for the supervision of staff and projects within the Subdivision & Site Plan Administration, Adequate Public Facilities and Environmental Program Sections. He is the staff liaison to the Board of Appeals, providing technical support regarding County regulations.

Fassen began his career with Charles County Government in December of 1999 as an Environmental Planner. He was responsible for multiple projects for compliance with County zoning and forest conservation. His duties also included the management of the County Forest Conservation Program to ensure compliance with state regulations. During his employment with the County, Faasen has also served as a Subdivision Review Planner and Program Manager.

Prior to coming to Charles County Government, Faasen was a Cartographer and Quality Control Specialist for the Michael Baker, Jr., Inc., of Alexandria, Virginia. There he monitored and regulated the production of flood insurance rate maps for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). He worked extensively at the FEMA headquarters in the Mapping and Analysis Center, providing both remote sensing and GIS analysis to aid in disaster relief efforts.

Faasen holds a Bachelor of Science in Geography with a minor in Geology from the University of Maryland in College Park.

County officials say they are in the process of recruiting for a permanent Planning Director.
