St. Mary's County Implements Emergency Preparedness Plan To Aid Seniors

LEONARDTOWN, Md. (Aug. 7, 2007) - St. Mary’s County Government’s Department of Aging has executed Stage Two of its Heat Emergency Preparedness Plan due to the Heat Advisory for Tuesday, August 7. The plan will help safeguard senior citizens who need help with refuge from the excessive heat.

The three Senior Centers will remain open today until 7 p.m. The Garvey Senior Center is located on the Governmental Center Complex at 41780 Baldridge Street (301-475-4200 ext. 1050); the Loffler Senior Center is in the Chancellor’s Run Regional Park at 21905 Chancellor’s Run Road in Great Mills (301-737-5670 ext. 1658); and the Northern Center is located at 29655 Charlotte Hall Road in Charlotte Hall (301-475-4002 ext. 1001).

The Centers are air conditioned and staffed by employees and volunteers. The Senior Centers can provide relief from the heat for the county’s older adults (60 and older). The Heat Advisory is associated with high temperatures combined with high humidity levels.
