LEONARDTOWN, Md. - A single vehicle accident has left one Leonardtown man dead. On Wed., Feb. 14, at approximately 4:06 p.m., a SUV left the road and careened through several yards in the Leonardtown area.

According to police, a 2005 Toyota Highlander was traveling southbound on Point Lookout Road in the area of Winter's Lane in Leonardtown when the vehicle suddenly left the southbound shoulder of the roadway, traveled through a ditch, several front yards and came to rest when it struck a tree. The vehicle was operated by Barbara Matthews Knoeller, 72 of Leonardtown.

There was extensive front end damage to the vehicle.

The front seat passenger in the vehicle was the operator's spouse, William August Knoeller, 75 of Leonardtown. Mr. Knoeller was flown from the scene by Maryland State Police Helicopter Trooper 4 to Prince George's Shock Trauma where he succumbed to his injuries.

Mrs. Knoeller was transported to St. Mary's Hospital by the Valley Lee Volunteer Rescue Squad and a short time later she was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital where she is listed in critical condition.

The collision investigation was assumed by the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office Collision Reconstruction Team. At this time, neither alcohol or speed are believed to be contributing factors.
