18-Y/O Man Dies in Lone Vehicle Accident on Route 6


LEONARDTOWN, Md. - According to the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Department, on Dec. 01 at 11:42 p.m., Darren L. Anderson, age 18 years, of Mechanicsville, was driving a 1996 Chevrolet S-10 pickup west bound on Maryland Route 6 near Oakleaf Circle. Anderson failed to maintain control of his vehicle and exited the right roadside.

The vehicle first struck a guardrail, then began to slide down a steep embankment before overturning and striking a tree on the driver's side at the rear of the cab. The vehicle came to rest on its roof a short distance past the tree.

The driver was the only occupant in the vehicle. He died from his injuries at the scene. No other vehicles were involved in the collision. Driver error is believed to have been a contributing circumstance.

The investigation was conducted by the St. Mary's County Collision Investigation Team.
