Men in Possession of Stolen Rifles Flee Police; Try to Strike Officers w/Car

On March 6 at 5:20 p.m., Charles County Sheriff's officers attempted to stop a vehicle bearing stolen tags on Crain Highway south of La Plata but the driver refused to stop. Sheriff's officers, with assistance from the Maryland Transportation Authority Police, pursued the vehicle on Rock Point Road in Newburg. The vehicle slid into a field and a Sheriff's officer and the MTA officer exited their cruisers to apprehend the occupants of the suspect vehicle. The driver of the suspect vehicle drove directly at the officers, who had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit. After attempting to ram one police cruiser, the suspect vehicle struck another cruiser. The suspect vehicle stopped in a ditch and officers quickly apprehended the occupants.

Officers found seven rifles in the vehicle and learned those rifles had been stolen in a burglary earlier in the day in La Plata. The driver, Anthony Michael Henriques, 39, of Clements, was charged with four counts of first degree assault, first degree burglary, theft, destruction of property and numerous traffic citations. The passenger, Derrick Augustus Queen, 35, of Charlotte Hall, was charged with the theft of the tags on the suspect vehicle, which were stolen in St. Mary's County. The accused were being held at the Charles County Detention Center pending appearances before the district court commissioner. Cpl. J. Puffenbarger investigated.
