Man in Waldorf Safeway Parking Lot Claims to have Bomb

On Sept. 4 at 3:56 p.m., Charles County Sheriff's officers responded to Safeway at 10 King Street in Waldorf for a suspicious person report. Officers contacted a man who exited a vehicle he was sitting in and discovered wires running under his clothing and what appeared to be a pipe bomb taped to his leg. The man told the officers the bomb would go off at 5 p.m.

The man was placed into custody and a perimeter was set up. Several businesses were evacuated. The State Fire Marshall's Office responded and x-rayed the device and determined that the device was not a bomb. The man was taken for an emergency evaluation with criminal charges pending at a later date. Officer Y. Austin is investigating.
