Domestic Disturbance Ends in Fiery Crash

On April 18 at 1:20 a.m., Charles County Sheriff's officers responded to a residence in the 7700 block of Hawthorne Road in La Plata for the report of a domestic disturbance. Investigation revealed Charles Johnson, Jr., 38, of La Plata was involved in an argument with his brother but prior to officers' arrival Johnson fled the scene. While officers were on the scene, a citizen called 911 and reported a vehicle on fire on Rose Hill Road near Tiverton Drive in La Plata. The caller said the driver was lying in a nearby ditch and when the caller attempted to check on the driver's condition, the driver fled into the woods. When officers arrived on the scene, they found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames. The vehicle had left the roadway and struck a tree, ejected the driver and caught fire. The Fire Department responded to extinguish the fire. Officers located the driver in the woods and identified him as Johnson. Johnson had sustained incapacitating injuries and was flown to Prince George's General Hospital. Officer J. Martin is investigating.
