Head-on Collision Claims 1 Life - 2 Injured


On August 22, 2004, just before 0145 hours, the Emergency Communications Center received a call regarding a head-on motor vehicle collision in the area of Rt. 5 and Old Lockes Hill Road in Mechanicsville. Road Patrol Units of the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office were the first to arrive on the scene. An accident reconstructionist was immediately requested.

It was discovered that a 2004 GMC pick-up, being operated by Alvin Leroy Tippett Jr. of Mechanicsville, was traveling southbound in lane # 1 of MD. Rt. 5 just North of Old Lockes Hill Road. It was struck head on by a 1986 Chevrolet pick-up being operated by a Dale Jerome Moore Sr. of Mechanicsville who was traveling northbound in the same lane.

Mr. Moore was pronounced dead on the scene. Mr. Tippett and his front seat passenger Sean Andrew Caywood of Mechanicsville were both flown to Prince George's Shock Trauma and are both expected to recover from there injuries.

Alcohol may have been a contributing factor in this collision. At this time, there are no known contributing factors for the driver of the 2004 GMC, Alvin Leroy Tippett Jr.

Road Patrol Units from the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office and the Maryland State Police assisted in the investigation. Emergency Services were performed by the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department and the Mechanicsville & Hughesville Volunteer Rescue Squads. The collision Investigation remains open pending further investigation by Accident Reconstructionist DFC. Douglas S. Mills of the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office.
