A Salute to Old Glory
|Perhaps the most well-known of the barn flags in our area is the one along northbound Route 4 in Owings. Twenty years ago, Heather Smith painted the American flag on the barn owned by Virginia and Calvert Norfolk. Smith, an art teacher with Calvert County Public Schools, explains that she did it as a tribute to Operation Desert Storm troops, who were beginning to return home at that time. She said that when she proposed the painting to the Norfolks, "They didn't hesitate; they jumped right on it."
