The 1999 Air Show was held on Saturday, 29 May 1999 from approximately 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  The sun was hot, but the humidity was low and the sky was clear.  You couldn't have asked for a better day.

Our staff attended and had a wonderful time.   Every aspect of the show seemed to be meticulously organized as to ensure it's success and the pleasure of the audience.  We arrived on base and were guided to our parking in the GOLD lot.  After a short walk, buses promptly shuttled us to main exhibition area.  All told, our time from front gate to the main area was no more than 20 minutes.

Once at the show, we couldn't help but notice how well organized everything appeared to be.  Despite the large masses of people, we never experienced an annoying episode of congestion or overly long waits.  There were ample booths serving refreshments and food that was guaranteed to suit the majority of palettes.  We didn't even experience seemingly infinite queues at the rest facilities as are typically the norm at most large outdoor events. Everyone was even extremely courteous about not walking in front of pointed cameras.  If only our trips to Disney World had been quite so pleasant.

The military aircraft on display were all manned by officers dressed in their flight suits.  All of the military personnel encountered were extremely professional and polite.  We spotted many autographs and personal tours being given to the younger spectators.  We imagine that these experiences had a greater impact on the recruiting effort than did the Navy's recruiting exhibit.

In addition to the military aircraft, there was a wide assortment of historic aircraft on display courtesy of various clubs and private parties.  There was also a fine assortment of historic automobiles being exhibited.  Finally, one of the hangars was dedicated to trade exhibits hosted by a variety of defense contractors who provide support to the Patuxent River Naval Complex.

The air show acts were headlined by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels.  Other acts included a wing walker from the Flying Circus in Virginia; the Shockwave Jet Truck; Manfred Radius; Patty Wagstaff; Ian Groom; and the U.S. Marine Corp's Fat Albert.

For those of you who were unable to attend the show this year, we've uploaded the contents of our digital camera for you to peruse.  Please click on the links below to get started.
