Petty Officer 2nd Class Stephen Angell

Petty Officer 2nd Class Stephen Angell.A 2010 Huntingtown High School graduate and Huntingtown, Maryland native is serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the amphibious assault ship, USS Bataan (LHD 5).

Petty Officer 2nd Class Stephen Angell is a firecontrolman aboard the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship operating out of Norfolk, Virginia.

A Navy firecontrolman is responsible for maintaining the displays for combat systems.

"I like that my job keeps me busy," said Angell. "I have a strong pride taking care of my equipment."

Commissioned in 1997, the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, USS Bataan, is 844 feet long. The ship is named in honor of the defense of the Bataan Peninsula during World War II and is the second ship to bear the name.

Bataan, one of the largest of all amphibious warfare ships, resembles a small aircraft carrier. It is equipped with a mix of helicopters and attack aircraft, launchers and machine guns and an extensive medical facility with 600 hospital beds.

"I have the best job in the entire world," says Capt. J.C. Carter, commanding officer of the USS Bataan. "Every day, I get to work the best young Americans that our country has to offer! They have endured long deployments and they have engaged the enemy successfully! It is an honor to serve alongside the next greatest generation!"

Approximately 70 officers and 1000 enlisted men and women make up the ship's company. Their jobs are highly specialized and keep each part of the amphibious assault ship running smoothly. The jobs range from washing dishes and preparing meals to maintaining engines and handling weaponry.

"I love working with the people in my crew on this ship," said Angell. "There is a great camaraderie here."

Although it is difficult for most people to imagine living on a ship, the challenging living conditions build strong fellowship among the crew. The crew is highly motivated, and quickly adapt to changing conditions. It is a busy life of specialized work, watches, and drills.

As a member of one of the U.S. Navy's most relied upon assets, Angell and other Bataan sailors know they are part of a legacy that will be last beyond their lifetimes.

"Since joining the Navy, I have learned to be a self starter and how to be a better leader," said Angell.

PFC Jeff Estlack—USA

PFC Jeffrey Paul Estlack was deployed to Iraq with 1st CAV DIV 615th ASB bravo company (from Fort Hood TX) in Feb 2004 and was able to come home for 2 weeks in Oct 2004 to see his son come into the world. When his son Paul was 9 days old he had to go back to Iraq. I remember it like it was yesterday. Jeff was holding Paul and they both had on desert cammies. Jeff is his uniform and Paul in his hat and bib that matched. We walked around and we both held back tears. A kind lady walked up and asked if he was going overseas and we said yes she said she would pray for him and said a simple thank you and that's when reality hit. He was leaving and he had to go soon. we both checked the board and his plan was on time and he needed to go. We both took a deep breath and said our goodbyes. It was a sad moment but I stayed as strong as I could. I didn't want him to feel worse than he already did. So we kissed and hugged one last time and I had to walk away. I don't think I made it 2 steps before the tears fell. I still cry when I think about it today, a year later. But he came home in one piece 6 months later and now we are happy healthy and together again as a family!

Jeff, I love you with all of my heart. Thank you for all that you do, I could never repay you for the time you had to be away fighting for our freedom.

Jeff is now currently in the National Guard in Prince Frederick, Md.!

2LT Neal Murray—National Guard

2LT Neal Murray
But above all of the confusion of those bound to the ground, he spoke with his Archangels and created Aviation to relieve the wearniess of the infantry's feet, the increase the vision of the artillerymans eyes, the sound of the signalmen and to speed the goods of the quartermasters and others to those in need. And to show his pleasure with his new aerial angels, he created the most special one of all: the Attack Aviator, whose mighty wings silences foes with their firey blast of cannon, rocket and missiles.

SPC Jeff Estlack—USA

Jeff served in Active Duty Army then went on to serve in the MD Army National Guard then onto the NV Army National Guard. He passed away on June 25, 2010 in Las Vegas.
