This May Mass is always held on the Saturday before Memorial Day weekend with prayers of the Rosary starting at 10:30 AM and Communion Mass at 11:00 AM. This year’s event is Saturday, May 21, 2022. The event is dedicated to remembering the young people, young military, and special needs persons whose names are engraved on the granite memorials along with all Loved Ones who have passed. The Pastor of Holy Face Catholic Church, Father Jerry Gamrot is our celebrant.

This scenic memorial is unlike any in Southern Maryland. Dedicated in May 1986, it is a quiet, hallowed place where families and friends of all Faiths can come to grieve and recall the memories of those lives that were suddenly cut short. The Memorial, with its “Lady of Lourdes” grotto surrounding a beautiful statue of a young Blessed Mary, continues to attract greater numbers of visitors who come to pay their respect to the more than 200 names that are inscribed on the fourteen granite monuments installed on this ¾ acre site.

The Memorial was inspired by Eddie and Agnes Tippett as a tribute to their son Tom following his tragic death at age eighteen in 1984. The historic grotto was donated by the nuns at St. Mary’s Academy in Leonardtown where it stood for 82 years and is now 118 years old. The monuments and the grounds are operated and maintained by the St. Mary’s Youth Memorial Board of Directors which is comprised of members of the Knights of Columbus from three (3) Southern Maryland Councils.

The site of the Memorial can be found just South of the intersection of Great Mills Road and Point Lookout Rd. [Route 5] in St. Mary’s County. Parking is available and it is recommended for visitors to arrive early for the preferred parking.

Additionally, each year a Candlelight Vigil is held on November 2nd., “All Souls Day” @ 7:00 pm.
All of our celebrations are open to the public.

For additional information, or to add a name to the memorial or to make a tax deductible donation, please contact Chairmen of the Board of Directors, SK Chuck Shilling at (301) 535-8339 or write to: St. Mary’s Youth Memorial, P.O. Box 36, Piney Point, MD 20674.
