6th Annual Shred Event in St. Mary's
Location: St. Andrew's Landfill, California, MD 20619    View Map
Date: 11/3/2018
Start Time: 8:00 AM
End Time: 12 Noon (04:00 Duration)
Posted By: Southern Maryland Online
The St. Mary's County Department of Public Works & Transportation will conduct the 6th annual community document shredding event at the St. Andrew's Landfill on Saturday, November 3, from 8 a.m. to noon.

This community event provides residents an opportunity to have their confidential, private and important documents destroyed by a professional shredding service at no cost. The truck can hold approximately 12,000 pounds; turning sensitive documents into confetti-sized pieces. This type of shredding ensures confidential material cannot be copied. All paper material shredded during the event is recycled.

Community shredding events help protect individuals from identity theft and consumer fraud which have become an epidemic in our communities.

Citizens are asked to refrain from bringing materials which are not confidential in nature, such as newspapers and magazines (these items can be disposed of at the six Convenience Centers) as they will cause the truck to quickly fill up. The shredder can handle simple staples, paper clips, spiral note books, and thin metal prongs, however it cannot accept 3 ring binders. Residents should limit the number of boxes brought to the event 3 standard bankers' boxes (10"H x 12"W x 15"D) per person. A total of 13,460 pounds (6.73 tons) of paper was collected at the last event held on June 23, 2018.

For more information about the Shred event, contact the St. Mary's Department of Public Works and Transportation at 301-475-4200 ext. *3550. For more information on recycling programs, log on to www.stmarysmd.com/dpw/

About the SCaN Internship Program:

The SCaN Internship Project (SIP) is a paid internship hosted by NASA's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, OH, and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. SIP is open to high school seniors, undergraduate and graduate students who are pursuing a career in space communications and navigation, or have an interest in these areas. SIP is sponsored by the SCaN Policy and Strategic Communications Office at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. SIP takes place during the summer, for 10 weeks, with potential continuation during the school year.

The internship allows students to perform hands-on training with real mission scenarios, gain exposure and analyze powerful space communication systems, utilize networks software tools and effectively communicate their findings in a final presentation to NASA management. Each student is paired with an experienced and multidisciplinary mentor who counsels the student with his/her work, and also engages with career planning.

Students are introduced to space communications and navigation knowledge and practices through their participation in the program. Each year, as the students’ knowledge matures, their corresponding NASA activities and training increase in complexity.

100% of the donations go to Children's National Hospital in Washington, DC. TOGETHER we will make a difference for sick kids!

Your donation is tax-deductible and will make miracles happen for families who desperately need them.

This year we are teaming up with PepsiCo to present our Dew the Duos theme. PepsiCo will be providing free cans of Mountain Dew to players participating in the gaming marathon as an incentive to help raise money for the Extra Life charity.
