St. Mary's Association of Model United Nations (SMAMUN) is a simulation of the United Nations where students participate by acting as delegates from various countries, non-governmental agencies, as well as other societal agencies. In doing this, students analyze, evaluate, and synthesize sources as they develop an advanced understanding of the United Nations and contemporary international issues. This event is open to ALL 5th graders, middle school, and high school aged students in St. Mary's County.

The conference is Friday, January 26, 2017 from 4-8pm, and Saturday, January 27 from 9am-3pm.

The Newtowne Players will present Tennessee Williams' classic drama "A Streetcar Named Desire" Jan. 26-Feb. 11 at Three Notch Theatre, 21744 South Coral Drive in Lexington Park.

Performances will be Thursdays-Saturdays at 8 p.m., with matinees on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $13 for military and senior citizens, and may be purchased online at www.newtowneplayers.org, or reservations may be made by calling 301-737-5447. Due to language and subject matter, "A Streetcar Named Desire" is not recommended for children.

"A Streetcar Named Desire" won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1947, and reveals to the very depths the character of Blanche du Bois, a woman whose life has been undermined by her romantic illusions, which lead her to reject—so far as possible—the realities of life with which she is faced and which she consistently ignores. The pressure brought to bear upon her by her sister, with whom she goes to live in New Orleans, intensified by the earthy and extremely "normal" young husband of the latter, leads to a revelation of her tragic self-delusion and, in the end, to madness.
