Following the completion of improvements at John G. Lancaster Park in Lexington Park, the Department of Recreation and Parks is set to host a ribbon cutting ceremony at the park on Tuesday, September 26 at 2 p.m. The public is cordially invited to attend. The park is located at 21550 Willows Road in Lexington Park, MD.
The improvement project consisted of two new multi-purpose fields, a new park entrance, lighted parking area and a pedestrian pathway connecting the existing one mile trail around the park. Total cost of the project was approximately $1,528,000. Grant funding from Maryland's Program Open Space (POS) provided $255,000 towards the project. The Commissioners of St. Mary's County funded the balance. The county also acknowledges the U.S. Navy's continued support of this community park through a long-term lease agreement for the property.
"One of the goals of the newly adopted 2017 Land Preservation, Parks and Recreation Plan is to continue to improve and maintain our existing county parks, facilities, museums and open spaces for the benefit of residents and visitors," said Arthur Shepherd, Recreation and Park Director. "We are very thankful for our partnership with the U.S. Navy and for funding received from Program Open Space to assist with this enhancement project."
