Have questions about your private well?
Learn how to provide safe drinking water for your family.

Join us for a FREE seminar!

Approximately 1 million residents rely on private drinking water systems in Maryland. While these homeowners are responsible for checking their drinking water quality and maintaining their private wells, most homeowners may not know what they need to be doing. On Saturday, October 21, 2017, the University of Maryland Extension will offer St. Mary’s County residents the opportunity to learn about their private wells and how to ensure safe drinking water for their families.

“Houses don’t come with operation manuals for private wells, so often times, homeowners and renters don’t know what they need to do,” explains Daphne Pee, Coordinator of the Well Water and Septic Homeowner Education project. “Homeowners are also concerned about cost and don’t know whether they can trust the professional giving them an estimate. We want to teach homeowners what they can to do to make sure that their water is safe to drink, but also teach them when they need to call a professional.”

The clinic will be held at the Agricultural Services Building in Leonardtown from 9:30am to 11:00am. The local Department of Health will provide information about local drinking water concerns for well-users. University of Maryland Extension Educators will explain how private drinking water systems work, what steps to take to maintain the well, and how to ensure that residents have safe drinking water. Participants will have time to ask questions regarding their own drinking water concerns.

“The overarching goal of this program is to increase the number of Maryland residents who are taking an active approach to personal and family health by following proper testing and maintenance guidelines. Homeowners know that something is wrong when their water looks, tastes, or smells funny, but some hazardous contaminants can be invisible, tasteless, and odorless,” says Ms. Pee.

Only 60 openings are available for this program, and registration is required.

We want to teach homeowners what they can to do to make sure that their water is safe to drink, but also teach them when they need to call a professional.” The clinic will be held at the Agricultural Services Building in Leonardtown from 9:30am to 11:00am. Pee. Only 45 openings are available for this program, and registration is required.
