Richard Sydney Cox, 69, of Charlotte Hall, MD passed away on July 20, 2014 at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Dick, as he was known to family and friends, was born on March 28, 1945 in Baltimore, MD to the late Merle E. Cox and Jeanne Kraus Cox.
Dick served 20 years in the Army, Army National Guard and DC Air National Guard and enjoyed a full and satisfying career as an Air Traffic Controller for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Air National Guard and Martin State Airport. During his time as an Air Traffic Controller with the FAA he worked at Washington National, Raleigh-Durham and Memphis Airports. He retired from Federal Service in 2005. Dick enjoyed playing and watching baseball, shooting pool for fun and competition, spending time at the beach, being with family and watching his grandsons participate in their many sports and activities. He was an avid fan of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs and spent many years coaching his grandson Zachary's baseball teams and was one of the original founders of the Warriors Baseball Club of Charles County. Richard is survived by his loving wife, Peggy, his beloved daughter, Dawn Strain (Patrick), brother, Philip Cox (Roni), grandchildren, Zachary Stine and Ethan Strain, mother-in-law, Ina Harter, brother-in law, Charles Harter, close friends, Edward Zapf and Jacqueline Zapf and numerous nieces and nephews. Dick will be missed by all that knew him. Family will receive friends for Dick's Visitation on Sunday, July 27, 2014 from 3pm to 5pm at Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Road, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622. A Funeral Service will be held Monday, July 28, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home in Charlotte Hall, MD. Interment will follow at Queen of Peace Cemetery, 38888 Dr. Johnson Rd, Mechanicsville, MD 20659. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to: The American Cancer Society, P.O.
