James L. "Sonny" Bartz, Sr., 83, of Hollywood, MD passed away at his residence on January 10, 2014. Born on April 18, 1930 in District Heights, MD he was the loving son of the late Charles F. and Marian Rollins Bartz.

Sonny was the loving husband of Ellen O. Bartz, whom he married on November 15, 1958 in Trinity Church, Newport, MD.

Sonny is survived by his children; James L. Bartz, Jr. (Joan) of Mechanicsville, MD, Terri Van Asdlen (Dave) of Hollywood, MD, grandchildren; Andrew James (Katie) of Hollywood, MD, Kevin Cole (Kathie) of Mechanicsville, MD, Great grandchildren; Hannah Kay, Jacob Aaron, and Landon James. Siblings; Anna Mae Austin, Marie Burroughs, and Nancy Turner all of Mechanicsville, MD.

He is preceded in death by his brother Charles F. "Bucky" Bartz, Jr.

James graduated from Maryland Park High School in 1947 and moved from District Heights, MD to St. Mary's County, MD in 1947. He was the owner/ operator of a trucking company, until retiring in 1992.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM with prayers recited at 7:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home Leonardtown, MD. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at 11:00 AM in Mount Zion United Methodist Church Mechanicsville, MD with Rev. Ann Strickler officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers; James L. Bartz, Jr., Andrew James Bartz, Kevin Cole Bartz, Daniel I. Gatton, Randal Sloan, and Ronald Zimmerman. Honorary pallbearers; Robert Cooper, Douglas Bowles, and Dr. John Roache.
