Roman Kenneth "Chuck" Wood, 91, of Mechanicsville passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of January 4, 2014, after a brief stay at the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home. Born August 1, 1922, in Compton, he was the son of William Howard Wood (1896-1966) and Effie Estelle (Ewell) Wood (1900-1983).
He was raised in Silver Spring MD and was a 1940 graduate from Montgomery-Blair High School. In 1942 Roman enlisted for 6 years with the US Navy, that enabled him to attend 32 weeks of advanced electronic theory and math classes at Northwestern University, needed for the war time effort, to learn needed skills for shipboard Radar and Gun Fire Control systems, and served his country honorably with a tour of duty deployment that included support for the invasion of Sicily, Italy aboard the USS Wyoming. Departing the US Navy in 1948 as an Electronics Technician 1st class (ET1) using his Navy electronics training and experience he worked at several television and radio repair jobs before successfully starting and operating his own business "Wood's TV & Radio Shack" in Mechanicsville MD for 40 years before retiring and closing the business in 2002. In his younger days 1949 - 1956 he enjoyed playing baseball as a catcher with the Mechanicsville Immaculate Conception Catholic Church "I.C. Stars" baseball team and later became an avid golfer. He was an active member of the Wicomico Shores Golf Club for several years and won the Club Championship there in 1972. His other interests included exercise, yoga, bicycling, reading, dancing to "red-hot rock & roll" and he always enjoyed any chance he got to drink a cold beer and eat some steamed "hard crabs" from either the Drift Inn, Sandgates Inn or Sea Breeze restaurants. Roman and his beloved wife, Lorraine, who preceded him in death, were both founding-charter members and very active life-time members of the Mechanicsville, Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge #495. Roman was also a charter member of the Mechanicsville Volunteer Rescue Squad. In addition to his parents and wife, Lorraine, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph "Joe" Ignatius Wood (1919-1984), William "Bill" Howard Wood, Jr. (1925-1998) and his sister "Bernice" Elizabeth Roland Moore (1921-1991). He is survived by his brother, James Frederick "Fred", sister "Rita" Estelle Hysan, sons Thomas "Kevin" (Debbie), Howard Kim "Woody", "Gary" Keith, and "Dana" Eugene (Heather), daughter "Valerie" Lynn Sciarra (Harold), 9 grandchildren and 1 (one) great-grandson. The family will receive friends, Thursday, January 9 from 2 pm to 4 pm and from 6 pm to 8 pm, with prayers at 7 pm at Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home in Charlotte Hall. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, January 10 at 10 am at Mount Zion Methodist Church in Laurel Grove with interment to follow at the Mount Zion Church cemetery.
