James Roland Smith, 91, of Charlotte Hall, MD and formerly of Capitol Heights, MD passed away on October 31, 2013 at Hospice House of St. Mary's in Callaway, MD.

James was born on May 23, 1922 in Kensington, MD to the late Philip Walker Smith and the late Dorothy Mae (Walter) Smith.

He served as 1st Sergeant in the Army during WWII. Later he became employed with Metropolitan Transit Service (Metro Union #689) as a Bus Operator and retired in 1984. James was a member, as well as had the duty of Sergeant-at-Arms with American Legion Post #238, Hughesville, MD. He collected clocks, and loved working on cars and doing woodwork. James enjoyed his dog, "White Paw" and he also enjoyed living with his granddaughter, Misty Dobry and his great grandson, Jordan Dobry, both of whom were very special to him.

In addition to his parents, James was predeceased by his former wife, Mary Elizabeth Houser Smith; his son, James Smith, Jr.; his brother, Irvin Smith; and three grandchildren.

James is survived by his wife, Cornelia Frances Smith; his children, Katherine Angel, Phyllis Knotts, and Sharon Reilly; his step-children, Walter Payne, Steve Payne, and Shelby Carter; 12 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and 13 great-great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Family and friends will be received for James' Life Celebration on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with American Legion Prayers at 7:00 PM, at Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Road, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at 9:00 AM, here at the funeral home. Pastor Ronnie Miller will officiate. Interment will follow to Maryland Veteran Cemetery-Cheltenham, 11301 Crain Highway, Cheltenham, MD 20623.
