Dorothy Ann "Dottie" Schaffer Cox, 70 of Leonardtown, MD passed away on July 15, 2013 at Washington Hospital Center.

Born November 22, 1942 in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of Teresa O'Brien Schaffer and the late Frederick Stephen Schaffer.

Dottie grew up in Mechanicsville, MD next door to her grandparents, Elwood and Mary Schaffer. She graduated from Little Flower Catholic School and then attended St. Mary's Academy.

In 1959 she married Richard Carl Thompson and they had five children: Darlene, Anne Marie, Karen, Richard, and Mark. On October 3, 1970, she married her husband of 42 years, Michael Harold Cox. They had one daughter, Teresa Marie. Dottie was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

She worked for 20 years in the St. Mary's County Public School System, in food service. She retired in 2008.

Her loves included family, her dogs, playing cards, watching her "stories", cooking, and baking. Her favorite thing of all was making holiday meals and the family favorites were her pies and turkey stuffing. Her beautiful smile, blue eyes, and infectious laugh could liven up any room. She is deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

In addition to her husband and mother, Dottie is survived by her children, Darlene Theresa Young (William), of Lexington Park, MD, Anne Marie Simms, of St. Inigoes, MD, Karen Denice Ridgell (Joseph), of Dameron, MD, Richard Donald Thompson, of Leonardtown, MD, Mark Joseph Thompson, of Lexington Park, MD, and Teresa Marie Cox, of Frankford, KY; her siblings, Margaret "Peggy" Foley, of Lexington Park, MD, Frederick Stephen Schaffer, Jr., of Charlotte Hall, MD, and Mary Ellen Billig, of Denver, CO; ten grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.

In addition to her father, she was predeceased by two grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Family will receive friends for Dottie's Life Celebration on Monday, July 22, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 22375 Three Notch Road, Lexington Park, MD 20653. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Tom Gude at 12:00 p.m. Interment will follow in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 22375 Three Notch Road, Lexington Park, MD 20653.
