John Owen McCaughey died Friday evening, December 28, 2007 in the comfort of his home and in the presence of his wife Marie and son Gevan.

John was born April 21, 1915 in Crowley Louisiana. He moved to Jacksonville, FL in 1927 at 12 years of age. He attended Landon and regularly participated in Landon Alumni events. He joined the United States Navy in 1943 and proudly served his country in the Pacific Theater during World War II as a member of the SeaBees until 1946. Upon discharge he joined the United States Naval Reserve and continued to serve until 1950. His skills enabled him to build one of the first bridges over Pottsburg Creek on Jacksonville's Southside. John was an avid fisherman, racecar fan, and mechanic.

He is survived by his wife, Marie, of 61 years; sons, Thom (of Leonardtown, Md) and Gevan (of Ponte Vedra, Fl); Grandchildren, Laurie Cox, Amanda Apostol, Ashley Swarthout, and Abigail McCaughey; Great Grandchildren, Bradley and Emily Cox, and Landon Swarthout as well as many loving friends.

He is predeceased by his son Wayne.

The family will be receiving friends between 5 and 7 PM at Hardage-Giddens, 4115 Hendricks Ave, Jacksonville, FL on Monday, December 31, 2007. Funeral services will be held at Hardage-Giddens on Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at 2:00 PM.
