Dorothy Ann Murphy, 59 of Hughesville, MD died at Johns Hopkins University Hospital on December 12, 2007.

Born December 4, 1948 in Berwind, WV, she was the daugher of the late William James and Mabel Trula Wise Brain.

She is survived by her husband Francis W. Murphy, Sr., who she married on February 8, 1969 at the Waldorf Baptist church; her children, Francis W. (Frank) Murphy, Jr. and wife Amy of Hughesville, MD and William James (Billy) Murphy and wife Jaime of Aberdeen, MD four grandchildren, Breanne, Alexandra, Cora and Andrew, and one sister; Beth Irwin and husband Jimmy of Waldorf, MD.

After graduating from LaPlata High School in 1966, she began her federal government job as a clerk typist at General Services Administration in Washington, DC. She transferred in June 1967 to the Naval Ordnance Station in Indian Head. for many years, she attended night classes at the Charles County Community College and Department of Agriculture in DC to take classes in publishing. She held various positions in publishing from editorial clerk (typing), lead writer editor, and her final position as head of the Publications Branch when she retired in 2003 from the Naval Surface Warfare Center with 35 years of service with the federal government. She received many awards while working for Publications at Indian Head. The most notable was the Browining Award for Managerial Excellence. She was a past member of the Interlaboratory Committee for Editing and Publishing, Member and past officer with the Thomas Stone Athletic Boosters Club, past member and officer of LaPlata, Waldorf and Hughesville Ladies Auxiliary of the Volunteer Fire Departments.

She enjoyed taking trips and family gatherings with her grandchildren.

The family will receive friends for a Life Celebration on Sunday, December 16, 2007 from 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm in the Brinsfield-Echols Life Celebration Home where a Service will be conducted on Monday, December 17, 2007 at 11am.
