Shirley Mae Mattingly of Waldorf, MD died on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at St. Mary's Nursing Center in Leonardtown, MD. She was 82 years old.
Mrs. Mattingly was appointed as a crossing guard on August 22, 1960 for the Prince George's County Police Department and served for 30 years. She served at Suitland Elementary, Shady Side, Crestview, Tayac, and was stationed at Temple Hills Road, Cedell, and Allenwood. Shirley received the Kay Ridgeway Trophy for Crossing Guard of the Year in September 1978. She was active in the PTA where her children attended school. She was a member of the Prince George's Crossing Guard Association and served in the office of Vice President. She was a member of the Crossing Guard Drill Team and took part in many parades and committees. She was elected to serve in the New Task Force. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Waldorf, MD and enjoyed bowling with the Prince George's County Crossing Guards League and was a Sunshine Girl with the crossing guards notifying members of births and deaths and other special events. She loved trips each summer to Ocean City, MD. Daughter of the late John Clyde DeVinney and the late Mary Ruth Wagner DeVinney. Predeceased by her parents; her late husband: Paul V. Mattingly Sr.; two late brothers: Joseph and Grant DeVinney; and one late sister: Marilyn F. Casey Survived by two sons: Paul V. (Mary) Mattingly, Jr. of White Plains, MD and Steven J. (Bambi) Mattingly of Mechanicsville, MD; two daughters: Linda M. (Hank) Moulton of Mechanicsville, MD and Shirley A. (Dave) Wells of Panama City, FL; one sister: Carol A. Gardner of Washington, DC; and 8 granddaughters: Laura, Cheryl, Lauri, Jessica, Shirlann, Regina, Julie, and Holly. Also survived by 9 great grandchildren. Visitation: Thursday, February 14, 2013 from 5-8PM with Wake Service at 7PM at Raymond Funeral Chapel (5635 Washington Avenue, La Plata, MD 20646). Mass of Christian Burial: Friday, February 15, 2013 at 11AM at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Waldorf, MD. Clergy: Msgr. William Parent. Pallbearers: Reginald Nathaniel Scott III, Jon Schaumburg, Glenn D. DeVinney, James Willett, and Bruce Muzzy. Interment: Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at 11AM at MD Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham, MD.
