Sylvia Joan Case Russell of Waldorf, Maryland, died on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at Civista Medical Center in La Plata, MD. She was 79 years old. Sylvia was born on July 4, 1932 in Syracuse, NY to the late Anne Genevieve Farrell Case and the late Holmes Dempster Case.
Her father's business brought the family from Syracuse to several places in Maryland, including Rose Hill Manor and a farm in Nanjemoy, now Green Meadow Estates. She graduated from La Plata High School in 1950. She briefly attended a college of horticulture and animal husbandry in Ambler, Pennsylvania before marrying Joseph Burroughs Russell. This part of her life took her to several places including McDowell, VA and the Baltimore area. Sylvia resettled in Waldorf in January of 1966 and shortly thereafter began working at Prince George's Community College while it was holding classes in Suitland High School. Her career spanned over 40 years. She retired in 2007. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Patricia Stone. Sylvia is survived by her children Gail Keefer and her husband Mike, JoAnne Boswell and her husband Dave, Joseph Russell and Jeffrey Russell; her grandchildren Kevin DeMarr, Brian DeMarr and his wife Amy, Alex Russell, Samantha Betke and Kyle Keefer; her one great granddaughter; her three step-grandchildren; her sisters Gertrude Weeks and Connie Wathen; her brother Stephan Case; her many nieces and nephews.
